Firearms For Self Defense

Why has Obama voted to ban the use of firearms for home self-defense?

Source: Illinois Senate, SB 2165, 2/25/04

Because we're a gun crazy society, we like 'em locked and loaded, we shoot from the hips, and we fire first and ask questions later ... yep that's us yanks!

Who cares if the kids shoot each other at schools, who cares if homeowners decides to take the law into their own hands and kill trespassers in their neighnor's yard, who cares if curious little kids accidentally discharged one into his/her little siblings? They're just collateral damages, we have our God given rights to bear arms, it's in our constitution! So y'all claiming to be victims of gun violence, just learn to suck it up!!

What is the best firearm for home protection and self defense?

Bound's hubby here:

Since you toss in self-defense with home protection I'm presuming you mean two different situations: in the house and outside the house.

If you mean inside the home only, nothing can beat a short barreled pump 12 guage shotgun.

Since you posed the question I will presume you have little firearms experience and have not already formed an opinion on this subject. Presuming you have limited firearms experience, I would suggest you get a medium framed .38/.357 Magnum revolver (such as Model 60, Model 13/64, Model 19/66). As a self-defense round, I would suggest a .38 Special +P firing a 158 grain semi-wadcutter. Many people here are fond of recommending Magnum loads for self-defense but the problem is when fired in the dark (in closed settings) the muzzle flash is blinding and the muzzle blast is deafening which will reduce the chance of having well aimed follow up shots. Unless you fire Magnum rounds in the dark in closed surroundings often, it will be hard to overcome these side effects and you will probably be wearing hearing aids because of hearing loss.

If you are inexperienced with handguns I would not recommend trusting your life to a semi-automatic in a high stress situation. Chances of an accidental discharge or getting fumble fingered and forgetting to release a safety under stress are too great. Besides, bullet selection in revolver loads offer more variety with less concern for reliable feeding as needed by semi-automatics.

Good luck.
