Why Do Schools Punish kids for fighting out of self defense ?

Hypothetical situation:
Your walking down the hall and a guy thinks hes tough and runs up to you and punches you in the jaw.
You fight back because you cant just let some one beat the crap out of you.....
Both of you get equal punishment??

Its all part of societies liberal agenda. The democrats/liberals believe that the bad guy-the criminal is the real victim of society and anyone who stands up to them are in the wrong.
Look at how things are in the real world, if a cop tazers some drunk who is attacking them and the drunk falls down, hits his head on a curb and has a seizure from it the ACLU is there the next day wanting to sue the police department.
