Female Self Defense

Should I take a self defense class?

I've been thinking about taking some sort of self-defense class. I am female and I feel like it could come in handy, because I'm going to college next year somewhat far away from home and I won't have mommy and daddy to protect me all the time anymore. I am healthy, but I am also very physically weak and I'm sick of being a wuss. Do you recommend this? Is it worth the time and effort? If so what type of self defense should I take?

Yeah but make sure it's a real self-defence class, not one of those 2 day weekend things where you have a "self-defence master" teaching all these moves which you won't even remember.

Also don't join Karate, Taekwondo, any of those martial arts. You won't learn enough to be able to protect yourself in 1-2 months.

Good self-defence martial arts that are practical and easy/fast to learn are Krav Maga and Defendo. Lots of women do Krav Maga because it's a good way for exercise, and it teaches how to get away from trouble, and how to quickly disarm a attacker, get out of a headlock and all that. It doesn't matter if you're scrawny, skinny, or physically weak, Krav maga teaches practical self-defence moves that cause maximum pain, and some of the moves you learn are so simple yet effective you'll ask yourself why you didn't join earlier.

If you have 2 months, I say go to 2-3 KM lessons a week and you'll know enough to defend yourself fairly well. Google local Krav Maga schools, you won't regret it.

If there are no Krav Maga schools, search for Defendo, Hapkido, or search self defence (your town).

Good luck in college.

What is truly the most effective place to hit a female in a self defense setting?

My girl friend takes a krav-maga based self defense course here at college and she has actually been going strong for like 6 semesters now. The instructor was going over the most vulberable areas to attack a man or women in the event of a life and death situation. The instructor said that the groin and breast were acutally very ineffective targets for females. The girls in the class (my gf included) disagreed completely. The instructor is a female as well so I guess she could speak from experience just as the students could. I guess I am confused as I was always told that for women, the breast and groin are just as effective as would be for a male?

I would have to concur with all of the above answers,

it is very true that woman can be hurt in the pelvis area though not as bad as us, but it still hurts a lot and it is very true about the chest *breasts. I have sparred with a GF at the time who was equal rank to me and I was not trying to hit her their but as we all know in most tournaments hits to the head are allowed but frowned on by many so we practice body shots and unlucky for her she is well developed making it that much harder for me or any other person to hit her in the chest with out hitting her there too. When it happend she was in much pain.

We of course got her a chest protector but she hated it and just endured it year after year until her Shodan and moved away after that.

She was one tough broad and yet still very woman like and feminine too. SO yes they are just as effective, I have seen it first hand.
