Extreme Self Defense
Do you think that martial arts could really be used as self defense in every situation?
One of my previous questions got me to thinking about this. There are a lot of people out there who brag about knowing martial arts, and of course, hollywood has glorified it to the extreme that it is hard to put it down, but I was wondering; If a person is trained in martial arts, which is more artistic movement than anything else, could they really defend themselves from, say, a "sucker punch"? Or a board coming to hit them in the back? Or someone lunging toward them in a frenzy? What about weapons? What about size? Could a 5 foot 105 pound person really fight off a 6 foot 2, 270 pound person? I am really curious about this. To what extent is martial arts beneficial?
Also, could it be that the importance of fighting should be placed more in discipline and psychological frame of mind that in physical strength?
If someone pointed a shotgun from 12ft away and fired then perhaps not though you may be lucky who knows.
For the most part all martial arts are tools to be used and its how you can improvise and utilise those tools in a given survival situation, learning martial arts is not a 100% guaranteed solution to winning by getting you off Scot free ,sometimes you may get injured and luck plays a part and also how mentally tough you are to continue on regardless ,although you certainly don't have to be into martial arts to be mentally tough and persistent.
But having a varied tool box of techniques is certainly an advantage I'd say.
Best wishes

Extreme Self Defense
What is the best martial arts for me?
Well, basically I'm looking for something that's very defensive. Not an art that is a self-defense art, though. It's kind of confusing what I'm asking, but I'm trying to find a way in fighting that is sort of fitting along the lines of "a good defense is the best offense". However, I am fairly light, about 100 lbs and I'm
also fairly flexible, with long legs, if that helps with narrowing down the selections.
I'm looking for something like this due to the fact my beliefs lie in waiting for the perfect opportunity, and striking with extreme precision.
Thanks in advance for any replies that I may get,
Matt Hwong
That's easy...Aikido. Aikido is defensive, but not a fighting art. In addition, Aikido pushes the practitioner to learn how to use things other than Newtonian mass and velocity to develop potency. Being flexible will also be very useful as there is alot of ukemi (i.e. receive body) falling and immobilizations. It also promotes shizentai (natural posture), and non-anticipatory moves. Of course, to be this open requires that the one move you make be very precise and efficient. That move is called, blending! Once you do this very simple, but precise and difficult, move than Aikido waza (technique) becomes extremely effective.
