Are economic and political systems inextricably linked?
Clearly, yes. But I'm asking because I've seen others make such remarks as "democracy has nothing to do with economic systems" and other comments suggesting that there isn't a strong linkage between politics and economics.
My take (until one or more of you expands my awareness, which is easy to do) is that economic systems are dependent in large part on political and legal systems. "Free markets" cannot exist in the absence of laws protecting patents, copyrights, brand names. Nor can entrepreneurs thrive within a system where government creates rules and regulations that stifle innovation. (*Side note: India's development could potentially rival China's if they would eliminate some of the insane provincial rules that thwart small businesses from operating freely.)
I've already blabbed too much. I could say a lot more but am more interested in what others say. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds.
