Effective Self Defense
What is the most effective method of self defense?
This question has been asked before many times. I ask based on my requirements.
I don't know how to fight. Period. I'm also blind in one eye. I want to learn how to handle myself in a fight - if the opportunity ever presents itself. I was in a situation recently where a drunk guy who had obviously fought many times before wanted a piece of me. Luckily I talked myself out of it...that time. The time's going to come where I won't be able to talk myself out of it and I want to be prepared.
Being blind in one eye will make it a little harder to do sparring or fist fighting. For that reason I would stay away from Karate. I would look into Aikido or Judo. You will want to get control of the situation and have it end on your terms. These two arts (especially Aikido) will let you do this.
Stay away from the flashy arts that can't really help you in real life situations like Kung-Fu or Tae-Kwon-Do. Hapkido might be worth looking into also. It's a Korean version of Aikido.
Good Luck

Effective Self Defense
What is the most effective self defense matial arts in the internet? Thanks?
William, where do you come up with your wonderful descriptions of ridiculous things? When did blue flames become anything more than drunk kids lighting the seat of their pants on fire?
And to answer the question, I'd say the most effective self-defense martial art in the internet has got to be Wit. Fencing with your wit is a constant game of parry and Re-Post (no, not riposte). Most peoples aren't terribly sharp, so the worst that'll happen is a little bruising, but only to your pride. Plus, it proves my previous assertion that there are no winners in a fight: only people who lose and do not lose.
Now, sure, there are sites on the internet teaching you how to perform secret techniques for $9.95, but the only secret worth learning from the web is, as William says, Ju-Jitsu (柔実 - "Gentle" "Truth"): there is no most effective art, only a most effective artist.
The wonderful thing about these Q&A sessions: You could ask, "What happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object?" and get an answer (not "An indescribable collision") that people would insist is right.
