Economic Empowerment Of Women

evaluate the reasons for the failure of the government of India in areas related to women emancipation?

The National Policy for Empowerment of Women 2001 aimed at bringing about advancement, development and empowerment of women in all spheres of life. However, a close examination of social and economic status of women, especially in the rural areas shows unsatisfactory achievements in most human development indicators. Citing published facts and figures, evaluate the reasons for the failure of the government of India in areas such as growing feminization of poverty; exploitation of women in low paid, hazardous and insecure jobs in the unorganized sector; wide gender gaps in literacy and in wage rates; and escalating violence against women and the rising incidence of female foeticide and infanticide. What concrete steps should the government take to address this issue?

Talibanization of the kind which occured in Mangalore and its tacit support by the govt in not taking stringent actions against the perpetrators and their unrepentant leaders who are giving more encouragement by their audacious attitude of praising such acts with selfcentred political ambitions.

Women's empowerment is the key to social progress?

That is what UN has said repeatedly, I have read it and listened on TV. The social engineers and policy makers, who are after execution of any program not the politics, assure us that it is the most cost-effective way to social progress.

I don't understand their rationale, even though I tend to understand.

Is it because they represent, in numbers, the largest micro-economic decision makers?
Is it because their position on social issues is more fluid than men's position?
More conducive to social engineering?

I think they say it because they have to pander to the various and sundry women's interest groups. It sounds so nice and PC, doesn't it? But it doesn't really mean anything. Social progress happened long before the women's rights movement began. It happens regardless of how women are treated. And what the heck is "empowerment"? That word gets bandied about all the time but nobody really knows what it means. It's just one of those feel-good modern words that doesn't really stand for anything.
