Are there women who have used the martial arts for real combat self defense?
If so, have they trained with the best of some guys and girls in her class? And is it true that traditional martial arts used for real life or death fighting different from the arts used for sport fighting where it's all controlled with rules and such.
While I don't know any scenarios personally of a woman using Martial arts to defend herself, here is an article where a woman who had martial arts experience did so : http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/dorset/8420770.stm
And, yes. Traditional martial arts used for self defense are worlds apart from sport fighters. Even in the staple sport fighting ground game of MMA,brazilian jiu-jitsu, there is a version for sport and a version for street. In sport competitions, there are rules in place for a reason. In a real defense situation there will be no rules. One of the most obvious differences is the use of standing joint-locks in the street. Standing joint-locks are hard to apply in sport because of things such as the gloves one wears (making it hard to grab), the rapping of wrists(making wrist locks difficult), and that in general sport fighters aren't douches. If you were to use joint-locks full blast in MMA, 9/10 times someone would end up with a broken arm or leg. Even small things like low leg kicks will be different in the street. In sport muay thai, the leg kicks go to the femur, in the street they will go to the knee cap.
Real life or death fights are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from sports, like MMA. I'm not bashing MMA either, i like it personally, its the closest thing to a real fight since the roman gladiatorial bouts. My only complaint is that everyone in the UFC can really only either punch or grapple and you very seldom see a good kicker.

Do you really think women should learn martial arts for combat self defense?
I hear that some people say that only men can do martial arts well, and it's all having bulky muscular strength and being over 6'5. Size can help, but it's truly the skill, courage, agility, flexibility, and the strength from within. For a woman just like a small man, she'll need more than just being very strong physically and still having a feminine body. She needs wisdom, resolve, aggression, and needs to win at any cost. I'd suggest a female who wants to be a cop learn martial arts of any form she wants. The only way a woman is going to do well against just about any man and physically do things in relation to males is to train at a male level. I'm talking life and death combat, not sports.
Absolutely, the tactics you learn may save your life. We train women the same way we train men, heck, there are some weapons a woman has readily available, as a civilian, if you have manicured nails, you can rake them across the eyes of your attacker.
A woman needs training just like any man, and this is what a school should offer. All people have the same vulnerable points in the human anatomy, not just the very obvious ones, but many bones and other parts that can be used as well, my favorites may be different than yours, each person finds techniques they are comfortable with, even against much larger opponents.
Do I think women should train in combat arts, well, yes, I teach both a combat art and I teach rape prevention, which is a very physical seminar, nothing like the stuff seen in the movies, real combat tactics for the street.
