do old people use their canes for self defense? is it legal?

the other day i found a cane that had to weigh at least 10 pounds and was as solid as a steel pipe. is this considered a weapon if an old person has it to use as a cane?
baton's are illegal and they weigh a lot less, can i pretend i am a gimp and get away with carrying a 3 foot killing stick?
i found it left in a shopping cart.
