Buy Self Defense

What's the safest product you can buy for home self defense when you have a small child in the home?

A few hours ago someone tried to break into my house. I have a 21 month old son and I'm afraid if I buy a taser or gun that it would be more of a risk to him then not having anything at all. What should I buy to protect us, but is also safe to have around kids.
I have a husband. He is for the most part limited physically, though he would love to be the manly man and protect us and I have no doubt that he would try is hardest, physically... right now I don't think he could offer us a lot of protection.

Use a dead bolt and a door wedge or bar to keep criminals out of your home. Crime prevention needs to become a habit.

The best defense is a good offense.

Can a 18 year old buy a handgun for self defense purposes?

I was wondering if a 18 year can buy a handgun and have it at house for self defense purposes only.

Yes in many but not all states an 18 year old can legally purchase a handgun.
Just not from an FFL.

Federal law prohibits only FFLs from selling handguns to this 18-21 age group.

Every other citizen is bound by their state laws regarding transfers and sales.

Link provided. It is interesting to note that this same link has been used before to prove that nobody under 21 can buy a handgun.
They must not have read the last part of the sentence... "from a retail firearm dealer."

"A person must be 21 years of age to purchase a handgun or handgun ammunition, and 18 years of age to buy a rifle or shotgun or ammunition, from a retail firearm dealer. (GCA, 1968)

Most of the link gives an overview of state based age restrictions which govern non-FFL private sales.

clzrhe - the state laws in addition to the federal laws means that in a few states even a private citizen can't sell a handgun to an 18 year old even though the federal lower limit is 18.
The state laws apply to each state's residents but the federal law specifically singles out only the FFL licensed dealers, restricting them from handgun sales for under age 21. That federal law does not apply to me but I am, of course, still governed by the laws of my state on this matter.
As a non dealer in Indiana the only restrictions governing the sale of my privately owned handgun would be that both parties reside in my state, buyer is at least 18 and not known to be a prohibited person (felon, etc.) It is really that simple and these transactions occur every day between private parties.

Anyone who answered NO - please respond to the question I have asked here:
