What a tool I can use to practice choke holds ?

Please give me suggestions on different drills I can do to be better at choking people out. I also train for real life, life or death situations because of my job. And do you know of any good books that show good law enforcement self defense and fighting moves. I'm open to any suggestions too.

Lots of good advice above except for one thing...

DO NOT TRY TO CHOKE TREES.

Seriously, this does absolutely nothing for you.

In the time off of training live, do curls if you want to strengthen yourself for chokes (since the muscles used are typically biceps and forearms).

Don't use grappling dummies. They are good for conditioning yourself for throws, not for submissions.

The best way to practice chokes is going against a live partner who is aware of them, and their defenses. When you can land chokes on people who know you are trying for them, and know the defenses. Then you know you can land chokes on guys NOT expecting, and unaware of how to defend them.

Choking a tree will not give you a stronger choke. There is literally no resistance or give. You get nothing from it, then what you would have choking the air, or pushing on a wall. While you get some conditioning just from flexing a muscle repeatedly, choking a tree isn't a very effective way to build muscle, or strength.

Doing weight training, or even using a damn thighmaster which has some resistance and give, will help a tree won't.

If I placed 400lbs of weight on a pulley machine, and you tried pulling it every day, never going through the range of motion to pull it, never budging it, you would never be able to lift it.

However, if I started you at weight you can lift, and had you lift it repeatedly, until it was easy, then moved up in weight, and repeating, then in theory you could one day work yourself up to being able to lift that weight. (body composition, peaking, etc, withheld)

Trying to choke on a tree sounds cool, but it isn't remotely going to do anything practical to help you.... other than that. Everything people said above helps...

BRUCE LEE and JEET KUN Do?

I just bought the full lenght, original edition of Bruce lee's "Jeet Kun Do". i'm so interested in the martial arts prospective of the book but more of the human philsophy and his analogies to nature. Philosophy is more of what i'm looking for out of this book. Is this more like an instructional book on self defense and the style of Jeet Kun Do or is it maily philosphy with parts that inlcude his ideas on martial arts. thanks

Jeet Kune Do

The Jeet Kune Do Emblem. The Chinese characters around the Taijitu symbol indicate: "Using no way as way" & "Having no limitation as limitation" The arrows represent the endless interaction between yang and yin.[27]Main article: Jeet Kune Do
Jeet Kune Do originated in 1965. A match with Wong Jack Man influenced Lee's philosophy on fighting. Lee believed that the fight had lasted too long and that he had failed to live up to his potential using Wing Chun techniques. He took the view that traditional martial arts techniques were too rigid and formalistic to be practical in scenarios of chaotic street fighting. Lee decided to develop a system with an emphasis on "practicality, flexibility, speed, and efficiency". He started to use different methods of training such as weight training for strength, running for endurance, stretching for flexibility, and many others which he constantly adapted.

Lee emphasized what he called "the style of no style". This consisted of getting rid of a formalized approach which Lee claimed was indicative of traditional styles. Because Lee felt the system he now called Jun Fan Gung Fu was too restrictive, it was developed into a philosophy and martial art he would come to call (after the name was suggested by Dan Inosanto) Jeet Kune Do or the Way of the Intercepting Fist. It is a term he would later regret because Jeet Kune Do implied specific parameters that styles connote whereas the idea of his martial art was to exist outside of parameters and limitations.[28]
