Best Self Defense Techniques

For someone going into Law Enforcement, what is the best complimentary fighting style to study?

On top of the basic self defense techniques, what would be the best fighting style to train while in college for a Police Officer? Bearing in mind that you are in a somewhat constricting uniform, it would most likely be based on strength over agility, and upper body, I would think.

The best is Judo. You have the throws/takedowns as well as jointlocks, chokes and mat holds*. That and Japanese Ju Jitsu or Wally Jay's Small Circle Ju Jitsu for the standing joint locks. I didn't say aikido because the learning curve (from what I've seen of practitioners of that art that come to us) is a lot slower than Ju Jitsu or SCJJ. I certainly wouldn't suggest bjj as they focus on going to the ground with your opponent. This IS NOT what you should do when weapon retention is an absolute priority.

*I have previously said to ignore mat holds for self defense, and I still stand by that. Mat holds are only practical for law enforcement as they are professionally responsible to restrain & arrest people)
