What's the best voltage stun gun to buy for self-defense?

I don't know how many volts would be too little or too excessive, I just want something to have with me just in case when I'm walking alone at night.

Zero volts, They are useless for self defense You have to get to close to the bad guy to use it and if you want to disable them you have to hold it on them for at least 2 full seconds. Try counting 1 America 2 America, it is along time when someone is trying to hurt you.
For a short time in the 80's my department explored using stun guns. While the electric arc was useful as a deterrent it was useless as a take down tool. It took a full 5 seconds of holding the stun gun against me to get me down, when I was Tazered in training I was down immediately and the operator was 15 feet away from me..
Pepper gas is better for a civilian. Get the more expensive kind that shoots in a stream, not a fog. You shoot towards a bad guy and they are disoriented enough for you to run a way. That is what a civilian should do when they are able to when they are confronted by a bad guy, run away screaming.
If you are really into electricity Tazer International now sells a civilian Tazer. It is one time use only. You shoot, if it hits right it disables the bad guy and you run away, leaving the Tazer. It has a serial number and refills are not sold without certification. Tazer gives you a new one when you show them a police report on the attack and your use of the Tazer.
Stun guns are sold everywhere but they are against the law to carry in many large cities. Just because you can buy it locally does not mean it is legal to carry.
Tazer will not sell you their civilian model unless it is legal locally.

what is the best self defense gun for someone who's 18?

I am 18 and shopping for a self defense gun, being that I am 18 I cant purchase a hand gun so i was looking for some advice on what I should do.

They are also safer for your neighbors, since rifles are much more likely to penetrate your walls and your neighbors' walls. Of course, these weapons are not concealable, but neither are rifles or any other firearm you can acquire at age 18. If you want something to carry concealed outside your home, your are out of luck for the next three years.
