What is the best way to learn self-defense at home?

I am wondering what is the best way to learn self-defense at home? Are there any good books, DVD's, websites, etc...?
It doesn't have to be a martial art by the way.

Learning Self defense from a book or a movie doesn't show you the exact techiniques you'll need to be more effective in your techniques.

and you can't ask the books or movies about any questions you may have.

so I'd say you may be out of luck there. The books and movies are good for reference only, and used for furthering techniques or learning another way to apply a technique that has already been studied.

the best way I could say to learn self defense is to take a self defense class, or study a Martial Art, sorry there's really not any other way to truthfully say it, and learn self defense in a proper manner.

Best kickboxing instructional video out there?

I want to learn how to kick box, for self defense/fitness. And the closest classes that teach it are almost 100 miles from where i live. So i need to know what the best video is that i can get to learn this. Has anyone succesfully learned it through an instructional dvd?

the tough part of learning kickboxing as a martial art (and not aerobic) through video is the contact portion of the art.

kickboxing is a contact art, that doesn't have forms persay, there are combinations, however you want to be able to hit a heavy bag or striking pads to learn how to execute those combinations correctly and have that contact as well..

not to say that there aren't great videos out there where you can learn.. this series is great for women, Lisa King, a muay Thai fighter is simple, straight forward and really motivational: http://www.centuryfitness.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10051&storeId=10051&productId=86151&langId=-1&product_parentId=13960&crumb=13501-13753&categoryId=13960&parent_category_rn=13756

now the only thing is, is that if you're going to train kickboxing/muay Thai at home, you're going to need the equipment.. and for someone that's starting out, i'd say a nice free standing heavy bag and some bag gloves should do nicely: http://www.sportsauthority.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1986679&cp=710957.1190149.1190161&parentPage=family

usually $99.00 and up, they're great for apartments and just in general (who wants to drill a hole in their ceiling and anchor a bag to a beam in the attic, right!) you fill the bottom with water or sand (sand is best) and pull it out of the corner when you're going to train.. simple!

well, i think it's great that you want to start kickboxing, it's a great workout and give a woman a great sense of empowerment.

just one suggestion, i saw that you said you wanted to learn for self defense.. just so you know, kickboxing, like any other martial arts, takes a bit to become accurate and effective enough to use in a self defense situation..

may i suggest that you take a day or weekend and head to the city and take a "self defense" course..

self defense courses teach you things that kickboxing doesn't, such as awareness, reactive movements, and what to do if you're attacked from behind or with a weapon. valueable tools i think every woman and man for that matter should learn. krav maga is the best i can recommend, however there are many others.

well, i hope this information and these links help! good luck and enjoy, martial arts is a wonderful journey!
