During a gun fight for self defense?

what's the best way of increasing your chances of survival ? I already am thinking of barricading myself near objects i.e cars, buildings and trees for shields until the threat is over since the criminal keeps shooting.

Of course putting objects into the path of the bullet would decrease your likelihood of being hit.

Best bet is having a good shot and taking out the perpetrator on the first shot.
