Is it legal to carry a retractable baton in NYC?

I was just wondering what the law states regarding retractable batons for self-defense in NYC. Thanks in advance for any help!

I don't think anything is legal in NYC! Getting mugged? I'm pretty sure fighting back is illegal. You might hurt the mugger.

Seriously though, most states consider billies, clubs, saps etc to be a concealed weapon. I'm betting you'll have to have a permit to carry one. Good luck getting one of those.

Are telescopic / retractable batons illegal in the UK?

Hi, are telescopic batons illegal for public use? Or are they Ok for use, as long as they are for self-defense purposes?

Only the police are allowed to carry them legally. Almost anything you can think of can be classed as an offensive weapon by the police if you carry it for self defence, even if you don't use it. The definition is so loose that they could prosecute you for carrying something relatively harmless if it could even conceivably be used to cause injury. That covers just about anything from a pen to a bunch of keys. However, carry something that has no other use except as a weapon and you are in real trouble.
