My brother got surgery on his arm. What are some legal self defense weapons for him?

He lives in New York...I wanted to get him a baton but i think that's illegal...Any suggestions?

I can't afford to take monthly martial arts lessons right now, but want to learn escrima.?

I've been thinking of buying a set of instructional DVD's to give me the basics on using sticks and/or baton for self-defense. Is this a good way to get around my lack of monthly funds? Any DVD's you can recommend?

Find a good instructor and explain it to him. He may teach you if you help out around their school. I trained with Dan Insanto a few times at seminars over the years and he never asked me to pay (back in my poor college kid days). I am sure you can find some one to help you avoid making the mistake of self learning.
