Basic Self Defense Techniques

Today is my first day of MMA training and I'm kind of nervous? Any tips/advice for me?

Basic Info: The gym I'll be attending is about an hour away (closest one to me), I'll be going 3 times a week (for MMA), and I'm sort of nervous. Any tips or advice for me?

I'm 17 years old and this is my first time. I want to do this to stay fit, self defenses, skills and techniques, and to compete for the love of the sport. I've always wanted to do Martial Arts since I was like 13 years old.

Thanks.

MMA training is like any other sport and, if you are not attending a fight team practice, will probably be less intense than doing a high school football practice. All these people talking about first aid being at the ready and saying you are going to be sore in the morning don't know what they are talking about. The vast majority of academies will not let you spar for your first few classes, so don't worry about getting you butt kicked or getting hurt or anything. The class will most likely start with a light warm up and basic skill work, then you will learn a couple techniques and practice them several times with a partner, then the class will move on to live sparring, you will probably only be allowed to just watch that portion.

I myself walked into a BJJ/Muay Thai gym at the age of 17 and got addicted immediately. The obsession has never faded, I still try and train 2x a day and love it.

Edit: Go in, take it slow, and treat people nicely. The most annoying thing any new guy can do is spaz out while practicing techniques doing everything 100 mph. Just try your best to do things slowly and correctly. Be humble and nice, I have no idea why martial arts/fighting is like this, but EVERYONE thinks they are amazing fighters without any training. Why these people understand that they aren't very good chess players without training chess, or not very good soccer players without having kicked a ball, but they imagine themselves to be pretty good fighters without training is beyond me. Try to avoid things like that.

Martial Arts in the Army?

I'm a martial arts enthusiast, and i was wondering about 2 things.

My first question is: What Martial Arts/Self Defense do they teach you in Army Basic? I know its a mix or certain Martial Arts and Techniques.

Second Question: After Basic Training, What Martial arts are offered, and/or, are you allowed off Base to go to a Local Dojo? (ps, I know Tae Kwon Do is offered on most Bases).

Also, I leave for Basic in two weeks.

Much of the Army Combatives are designed to improve unit cohesion, morale, and individual assertiveness.

They are not going to expect you to use it as your primary or secondary weapon. Your primary and secondary weapon is going to be small arms mostly.

The degree of effectiveness for killing using Army trained H2H is really low. I wouldn't recommend relying upon it. The system isn't designed with that goal in mind.

The US Marine's combatives also suffer from this issue, although I don't think at nearly the same degree. And Air Force and Navy would obviously not require them even for training esprit de corps.
