Martial arts instructionals: which ones for self defense?

i like self defense videos,,,bas rutten, isshin ryu, and suger ryu jujitsu are some of my favs,,, anyone got a couple they really like?

Videos will not help with self defense, you need a legitimate teacher to train you.

What martial art is good for "actual" self-defense? I am female and I am not interested in competing. Thanx?

Shihan J is mostly right... Some styles are worthless, though -- they're someone's interpretation of another art that they hybridized into worthless drivel.

Whatever you learn, try to get a feel for the instructor. Krav Maga is good, but sometimes too simple. Sport martial arts like BJJ, Taekwondo, etc. have rules, so the training focuses on things that work within those rules -- some of the tactics in MMA clinching leave a range of motion that would allow an attacker with a knife to stab you in the back, for instance.

Learn the difference between ambush-based arts (those intended for surviving an ambush) and sport-based arts (those intended for competition). Then pick one where the instructor seems to be skilled, and train. If your training ends up putting too many restrictions on what's permitted during free-sparring or fighting drills, then find a new art and start over. You may get lucky, or you may have to try every school in town. But you'll find one eventually.

By the way, good schools offer one or two free introductory lessons. Make use of those before signing up with one.
