What is assault and self defense in UK law?
The above answer is half-right.
I've I punched/grabbed or hit you, that's an assault.
You hit me back, that's retalitaion, not self-defence.
If you strike me first to prevent me striking you, that's self defence. It needs to be proportinate to the threat. [i.e. shooting someone who was about to kick you in the shins would not be self-defence.]

So a women can kick me in the balls for self defense but I can't hit her in self defense?
A kick to the balls causes severe pain, and women are allowed to do that in self defense.
But if a women is assaulting a male, we have to make sure we don't cause her any pain?? What the hell??
That's supposed to be a chivalry issue. But if a man is being assaulted by a woman, then I see no problem in him defending himself, even if it hurts the woman.
After all, if the woman attacks first, then she should be prepared for the consequences, just like a man would have to be.
