What time of ammunition is the best for an XD 40? For the range? And for self-defense?

What type of ammunition should I be using when I go to the range? I want something that is cheap, but doesn't give up quality. And for self-defense, what is the best type and brand? I plan on having a single magazine for self-defense and the others for range use.

A modern firearm ain't worth crap if it can't shoot any brand of practice ammo well. The Federal 180 gr or Winchester white box sold at Walmart works fine for me, but occasionally I'll see a sale somewhere and get some other brand.

For defense, I like Federal 165 gr HST, but Speer Gold Dot, Golden Saber, Hornady, Corbon, any modern JHP is fine. Just make sure it operates correctly in your gun.

I don't understand the logic of separating your mags between self-defense and range. You should be occasionally practicing with your self defense ammo at the range and rotating the usage of you mags to make sure they are always in working order (as well as occasionally striping and cleaning them after shooting).

I like and own .357 Magnum, .38 Special, .327 Federal Magnum, .45 ACP, .40 S&W, 9x19mm Parabellum, I would like the ammunition for Self-Defense. I like bullets in Hollow-points for Self-Defense.

i use federal all around for my 40 S&W and have never had a problem with them. American Eagle is made by them and is cheap and reliable practice ammo. a good personal protection round get Federal Expanding fmj. it works like a hollow point but better. because hollow point can get clogged up in the hollow part of the bullet and act like a full metal jacket. but with the expanding full metal jacket it will not clog and will have consistent expansion just as a hollow point does. it comes in 9mm, 45acp and 40 s&w. that's what i use in my XD-40. for the rest of your pistols look at Federals Hydra-Shok. is a hollow point with a little pin in the middle so it will break bone or what ever it needs to pound through. i will trust either with my life.
