Looking for a gun for self defense 9mm or smaller?

I am looking for a gun for self defense 9mm or smaller preferably heavy but not too heavy with a very light recoil. Any ideas? Please be specific with the make and model.
I am also looking for something that doesn't jam. I have friends who has Smith & Wessons and they don't like it because they jam a lot and don't recommend it at all.

I would not go any smaller than 9mm. You could look at the Taurus 24/7 or Millennium Pro Series, Springfield Armory XD, Ruger SR9, Beretta Px4 Storm.

Which is best for self-defense 9mm or 40 caliber? Why?

The 9mm will suffice, but is not ideal. This is why all the law enforcement departments that went to 9mm are phasing them out for either the 40 or the 45acp. All special tactics teams have already switched,including the FBI. and in the military all special units have already gone to the .45acp. The 40S&W is a good choice. Larger projectile, but less recoil than say a .45acp. The 9mm is ok IF you use top quality HP ammo. But I have seen the results of shootings with most calibers. I pass on the 9mm unless it is my only choice, then I load it with the best ammo available.
In a gun fight, you want to stack the odds as much as possible in your favor. Never "settle" for less.
I know this probably made some 9mm lovers mad, but facts speak for themselves. And their number one answer is just keep shooting till the bad guy goes down. What they leave out is that while you are still shooting at him, he can still be shooting at you!! I carry a pistol chambered in .45acp for some darn good reasons. (like the fact that they don't make one in .46acp!!)
