Best small gun for self-defense (home or personal) for a woman?

I've fired many guns (PS-90, .45, .22 rifle and handgun, .9mm Glock, etc.). I would prefer something like the .22 handgun I fired. This would be a relatively unused weapon - Something I can take out to the range to practice, and for home and personal defense. Thinking maybe a .38 or something similar? Please let me know how much your suggestions weigh, and how much recoil ("kick") they have, because I have small arms, being a woman! Thank you!

The best thing you can do is visit a gun store, preferably one with a range and one that rents firearms as well. Try out several different kinds of firearms, and get a feel for what you like and what you don't like.

Nobody here can tell you what kind will work best for you just like they can't tell you the best kind of car for you to buy, or what ice cream will be your favorite. Only you will know that.

If you're thinking of a .38, try one out at the range.

Would a .22 bolt action rifle be useful in self defense?

If someone was to break into my house, should i go for my baseball bat or my .22 bolt action rifle with hollow point ammo??
This question is hypothetical
i don't need lectures about if the police think the shooting is justified or not.

Well, which one will keep the person from getting within 10 feet of you?

A bolt-action would take as long to repeat a shot as a bat would take to make a second swing, so that's a wash.

As for the ammo, a .22 hollow-point is no better (or worse) than any other .22 ammo. They are all soft lead (even the ones with a super thin plating of a copper wash) and the tiny hole doesn't make it do anything different.

HAVING a firearm will be the main deterrent that makes the bad guy want to be somewhere else really quickly. Keep it ready, but store it safely and away from unauthorized hands.

Know the laws of your state as to what allows use of deadly force. While all home intruders should be buried six feet under, it's bad when the good guys are then victimized by the State.
